Horse stable now a luxury £3.25m Mayfair pad

By LLM Reporters   |

Former stable for sale at £3.25 million; it could only be Mayfair. The former horse stables of the Bishop of Salisbury are now a smart 1,197 sqft two bedroom mews-maisonette in Mayfair’s historic Mount Row, for sale through Wetherell.

The property in Mount Row can date its origins back to 1726 the year when Benjamin Hoadly (1676-1761), Bishop of Salisbury, had a grand mansion built as his London residence at No.43 Grosvenor Street. The leading Whig churchman of his day, Bishop Hoadly mixed in the highest political circles and entertained grandly at his Mayfair home.

In what is now Mount Row the Bishop had a stable yard and stables constructed for his official carriage, horses, groomsmen and household staff – and during his tenure Mount Row was known as Bishop’s Yard. The property currently for sale is likely to have housed the groomsmen manning the Bishop’s carriage, with the coachmen sleeping in the upper floors and rafters.

By 1745 the Bishop had been promoted to Bishop of Winchester and relocated to Winchester House in Chelsea. After 1745 the stable yard and stables in Mount Row became stables for the Earls of Northampton and also provided accommodation for the horses and carts that served the shops and taverns of adjacent Mount Street, which by then had become Mayfair’s local high street.

In 1892-1893 the yard and stables in Mount Row were modernised by local contractor George Trollope, with residential dwellings constructed above the stables. By this time most of the properties were in private ownership.

In 1929-31 the properties in Mount Row were rebuilt as mews houses, many with garages at ground level, designed in classic Tudor-revival style with attractive red brick facades, carved woodwork and bright and airy interiors by architect Frederick Etchells, built by local Mayfair contractor T. Downer.
