Hotel of the week: The Moorland Garden Hotel, Dartmoor in Devon

By LLM Reporters   |

Recently revamped and restored, the Moorland Garden Hotel enjoys a beautiful location between the untamed splendour of Dartmoor National Park and the magnificent natural harbour of Plymouth.

Formerly the Moorland Links Hotel, the property was purchased in July 2011 by business entrepreneurs Sonia and Brian Meaden (parents of Dragon’s Den TV star Deborah Meaden). An extensive refurbishment programme to restore the hotel to its former glory is underway, with the new owners having invested heavily in renovating the main reception areas and refreshing all 44 bedrooms, as well as cultivating the nine acres of tranquil gardens.

Original features have been maintained throughout the building and striking new interior changes have been made to create welcoming, luxurious and inviting public and private space. To celebrate the property’s original features and layout every bedroom has a slightly different design, with sumptuous fabrics and bold wall coverings adding a modern feel, while warm colours and moorland garden views capture the Dartmoor spirit.

Leading West Country interior designer, Nadine Judd, has introduced the ‘Garden’ of the hotel’s name into the bedroom makeovers. The Forget-Me-Not suite has a palette of pale blues and creams whilst the Lily of the Valley room has hand-printed black and green floral wallpaper.

Elsewhere in the hotel, the Crystal Room features 12 glittering chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling glass windows that look out onto the garden and meadow, with doors that flow to an external terrace and lawn. The Osborne and Little fabrics reflect the natural beauty of Devon’s rural landscape with warm muted tones.

The Wildflower Restaurant also overlooks the moorland garden, with glass doors leading out to an alfresco dining terrace with sun umbrellas for when the weather is fine. For an intimate meal with all the buzz of the restaurant, a semi-private space is set to the side accommodating up to 12 guests.

Located in the heart of the building, the Dartmoor Bar and Lounge is two-tiered with a quiet fireside area for relaxing and reading, whilst chairs, tables and sofas welcome walkers and residents to enjoy local ales and hearty bar food, providing the perfect spot to cosy-up in on a chill winter’s day.
