Six ways to bring Scandinavian style décor into your home

By LLM Reporters   |

Scandinavian style interior décor is celebrated for its minimalistic yet beautifully one-dimensional design, using a predominantly all-white color palette, which when done right can make your home seem brighter, lighter and all round much more sophisticated.

Interior designer Vanessa Arbuthnott gives her six top tips for creating a Scandinavian style living space.

Simple spaces

If you want to create a real Scandinavian style home, your best bet is to opt for all white units and simple décor. Using a lighter colour scheme will allow much more light to flood in and reflect off the walls, giving the illusion of larger spaces. It will also give your home a modern feel and using simple and slick units will allow much more storage space for those bits you want to stow away.

Get stripey

Everyone knows that stripes are a key element of Scandinavian style and can be added in many different forms to any room of your Home. If you have a room with a slightly simpler theme, then why not opt for a bold printed chair or footstool to make the room pop. Vanessa’s Scandinavian collection includes a whole array of fabrics to choose between, for a real authentic Scandinavian vibe why not opt for the Baltic Stripe in Sweet Pea & Lime which will add a really lovely touch to any room.

Wooden flooring

Wooden floors are a must in any home that wants to be in-keeping with the Scandinavian theme as well as adding practicality into the mix. Other great options are ceramic tiles or stone flags, both are easy clean options. If you feel the wooden floor needs a bit of vamping up, you could also add a vibrant rug into the mix – Vanessa’s rug in Rainbow offers an array of different colours weaved into the fabric, adding a bit of life into the room.

Bright furniture

In true Scandinavian style, if you have an all-white themed home then best way to add a pop of colour is by adding various different pieces of brightly coloured furniture. For example many people may opt for a Smeg fridge, house plants or colourful furniture which add a touch of colour without going over the top. Why not design your own bespoke made to measure furniture with some Scandinavian inspired fabric? Vanessa’s woven collection includes some scandi style designs including the vibrant pink and yellow Baltic stripe or the Lapland cornflower stripe, something a bit more out there.

Contemporary art

No Scandinavian style Home would be complete without adding some wall art into the mix, whether you opt for a large feature canvas or just a simplistic frame with a monochrome image, it adds to the character without over doing it.

Wallpapering

If you want to make your living area ooze Scandinavian luxe without being too pattern heavy, then why not wallpaper one wall in a fabulous printed design and leave the other walls plain. Vanessa’s wallpaper collection includes a number of eclectic designs, why not opt for ‘For the Love of Rose’ design in Raspberry to really add some style and sophistication.
