The offices and studio of the late restaurateur Peter Langan (1941-1988) have been transformed into a £5.25 million luxury Mayfair penthouse that is for sale through Knight Frank and CBRE.

Amazon Property, the London estate owner and developer, in partnership with McLaren Construction Group, transformed space at 6-8 Maddox Street into a 2,142 sq.ft. (199 sq.m.) dressed duplex penthouse.

It provides four bedroom suites, large reception space, two private rooftop terraces and balcony.

The Edwardian Neo-Baroque building at 6-8 Maddox Street was originally constructed in the early 1900s by architect Ernest George (1860-1922) as a commercial building with lodgings on the upper floors.

In the early 1960s the premises provided lodgings for Irishman Peter Langan, the son of rugby international and petrol station businessman Dan Langan. Born in Clarecastle in County Clare, Peter moved to London and after working at the petrol station on Park Lane, began his catering career at Odin’s restaurant on Devonshire Street in Marylebone, excelling at French cuisine. By 1966 Langan had become Head Chef and in 1973 the proprietor.

In 1976 Langan opened a second restaurant, Langan’s Brasserie on Stratton Street in Mayfair, in conjunction with business partner and movie legend Michael Caine (who enjoyed Langan’s cooking) and later Richard Shepherd, formerly Head Chef at the Capital Hotel.

During the late 1970s and 1980s Odin’s and Langan Brasserie became highly fashionable haunts for celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Margaret, Marlon Brandon, Mick Jagger and Jack Nicholson.

As the restaurant business flourished 6-8 Maddox Street became the offices for the restaurant group with floors for the finance department, recruitment and events/private dining, with a studio on the top floor.

Artists David Hockney, Lucian Freud, Gerald Moira, Francis Bacon and Patrick Procktor frequented Langan’s restaurants and in addition to complimentary food and drink, he provided storage space in his offices and studio. In return, some of the artists donated works which graced the walls of the restaurant group.

The property houses four luxurious bedrooms

In 1986 Peter opened Langan’s Bistro in Paston Place in Brighton and Langan’s Brasserie in Coggeshall in Essex, the latter near the country home he purchased with his wife Susan in the 1970s. By the mid 1980s the restaurant group was catering for 700 diners per day and Peter was involved in launching Langan in Los Angeles. Tragically he died at the age of just 47 in 1988 after a fire at his home in Essex.

In 2012 some of the group’s art collection was auctioned and by 2013 Peter’s business partners had sold all their shares in chain. Langan’s was restructured and 6-8 Maddox Street became offices for an architectural and engineering practice.

Now Amazon Property have added a new chapter to the history of 6-8 Maddox Street. The former Langan offices on the lower floors have been beautifully restored and architecturally enhanced to provide four luxurious apartments; now all successfully launched and sold.

The newly unveiled dressed penthouse on the top two floors provides 2,142 sq.ft. (199 sq.m.) of luxurious living space. The upper floor of the penthouse provides a spacious entrance lobby opening into a large dual aspect reception room that spans the entire depth and width of the building.
