The best hairstyles to rock when you can’t get to the barbers

By LLM Reporters   |

The style experts at Goodwin Smith look at the very best hairstyles to rock when you can’t get to the barbers.

Being locked up at home isn’t always fun, but it’s something we all have to do right now. We knew this lockdown would make us miss our mates – or going for a good workout at the gym, followed by a whiskey at the local. But have you thought about how much you miss your barber?

Sure, the two of you might not stare lovingly at each other during haircuts, or text each other every other day, but if you could use one man’s skills right now – it’s probably his.

If you were smart enough to get a trim before we went into lockdown, consider yourself lucky! But if you’re going to be catching up with the fellas on HouseParty or Zoom, before they screen grab you in all your overgrown glory – make sure you don’t get caught looking drab.

Just because you won’t be out and about as you normally are, you shouldn’t let your hairstyle hold you back. So, without further ado.

A man bun is a popular men’s hairstyle that is achieved when hair is pulled back into a bun at the back or tied at the top of the head, like a top knot

Rock that ‘fro!

This one is for the guys with curly hair. If you usually keep it short and tidy because you never had the time to learn how to properly manage your mane, then this is the perfect time to learn how to make your curls work for you. After you’ve washed your hair, use a tiny amount of product (we recommend a good, reworkable hair putty) and work it in while your hair is still wet, pulling at large strands to straighten them out.

If you can’t be bothered with product (and we wouldn’t blame you) why not just rock your curly ‘fro? Get yourself a pack of sporty headbands and tame those locks. Be careful to only pull the headband back far enough to keep strays out of your eyes. Beckham’s been here and done that – now it’s your turn!

Make (a)mends

If you’ve been growing your hair out for a while, and it’s starting to look a little rough around the edges then now is a great time to use damage repair products. Try this sage and cedar scalp treatment, or this Keratin oil hair treatment. You’ll start noticing how much more manageable your hair becomes after using them.

Take it to the top

Man buns, top knots – call them what you like. Find yourself a quality hair tie – or invest in an Invisibobble hair tie that won’t split or break your hair. Use your fingers to scrape your hair back from your face and twist it into a rough knot. Secure it with a hair tie and be amazed.

If you really like this look, you could commit to it a bit more by getting a slight undercut (far easier than a whole new style) that’ll make your look all the more dapper.

Sometimes, a buzzcut is the exact fresh start a man needs to reinvigorate his style

Accessorise

Suns out, guns out. If you find yourself outside enjoying a barbecue and a pint, why not pop some sunnies onto your hair and use them like a headband? A beanie is also a good idea for the less sunny days, or in-between-washes days. Use a slouchy beanie to complement your indoor look, a far sexier style than acrylic beanies that dads wear on fishing trips.

Go all in

If you’re more on the daring side, or you’re just done with the hassle of trying to make your hair look good, reach for the clippers.

You can shave your own head or ask your partner to do it for you – but try starting on the highest setting and work your way down as you feel comfortable. Sometimes, a buzzcut is the exact fresh start a man needs to reinvigorate his style, or perhaps discover it? Wentworth Miller didn’t look too bad, did he?

Whatever you decide, do it in style. Rock that headband the only way you know how. Hard!
