Top party hair trends and tips for the festive season

By LLM Reporters   |

The festive season is nearly upon us, bringing with it a busy social calendar full of excuses to get dressed up and rock glamorous looking hair. Whether you’re celebrating with friends or getting ready for the office party, you will want to look your very best this Christmas.

With this in mind we’ve asked Simon Hill, owner of SESH Hairdressing in Edinburgh, for his top party hair trends and styling tips for the festive season. This is what he said.

The festive season is almost upon us and as a salon owner, I find that clients are keen to move away from the typical hair ups and bouncy blowdry’s for their Christmas party nights. At SESH we pride ourselves on our ability to think outside of the box and create looks that are fashion forward and push the boundaries, which our clients love.

The festive period is the perfect time to be experimental with your style and try something completely new and out with your comfort zone. Throughout 2018 there has been a shift from the once prevalent bouncy blowdry and tonged ends, to more relaxed texture and embracing your natural hair where possible and this theme is set to remain popular over Christmas and New Year.

Braids are one of our favourite trends to work with at this time of the year, they look incredible and instantly add a glam edge to any outfit. This edgy braided up do is a look our clients love and is fairly easy to recreate:

1.) Avoid washing your hair the same day as it will have more grip and manageability if washed 24 hours prior to styling. If this is not possible the Sebastian Dry Shampoo works well to create a ‘lived in’ feel.

2.) Begin by sectioning your hair, take a section of hair down the middle which will form the braid. I recommend a section of hair around two or three inches wide as you want your braid to be textured and bold

3.) Take two smaller pieces of hair from within this section and begin to knot them. This is a super effective way to create a ‘braided’ effect but the knots in your hair add a modern and unique twist. Continue this down your hair until you reach the nape of your neck and don’t be too neat as texture and dimension are key to this look

4.) Tie the end of this braid using a clear hair tie at the nape of your neck to create a low ponytail and use your fingers and a comb to back comb the length of the ponytail. Create a lot of volume to ensure that relaxed and rugged finish is achieved.

5.) Finish with a mist of texturising spray and loosen pieces of the braid until you are happy with the finished look. The Wella Eimi Volume Sugar Lift is one of my favourites for this and is available to purchase in the salon.

If braided styles are not for you, creating stunning curls that ooze elegance and class are another look that is always on trend for the festive season. The key to this style is achieving a shiny, healthy finish on your hair and locking the style in place all night long. For looks like this we usually suggest a conditioning or moisturising treatment in salon to ensure hair is in peak condition and will look stunning when styled.

The System Professional Hydrate Mask is a brilliant at home alternative if you are unable to schedule an appointment and this is also available to purchase in the salon. This look can be really versatie and individual dependent on your individual preference and style so work with the curl/wave that you like best and be sure to use lots of hairspray to hold it in as you celebrate this Christmas.
