Lisbon is the perfect destination for a city break, come rain or shine, and if you’re looking for a central hotel with stand-out décor and an impressive overall experience, then the one and only Tivoli Avenida Liberdade should be at the top of your list.

Situated on the city’s main avenue, Avenida da Liberdade, this five-star hotel is in the best location for those who want to immerse themselves in city life, as it has easy access to most of the city’s points of interest, famous neighbourhoods, monuments, museums and night-life spots.

Portugal’s capital is the oldest city in Western Europe and one of the oldest cities in the world, so there’s plenty of history, and sights, to go with it. Lisbon also has one of the mildest climates on the continent, meaning you’re bound to have some pleasant weather in order to ensure you can go exploring and even enjoy some time by the sea.

The city is known to be built on seven hills: Castelo, Graca, Monte, Penha de Franca, S.Pedro de Alcantara, Santa Catarina and Estrela – so just be prepared for plenty of walking – or enjoy a ride on one of Lisbon’s many trams, which also make for a great photo opportunity.

Hotel

The reception and lounge area is vast, but inviting, thanks to the comfortable-looking arm chairs and sofas

The central location of Tivoli Avenida Liberdade certainly sets the hotel apart from other Lisbon city centre locations – as does the decor, the service, and the overall experience when staying there.

As soon as you walk in through the main doors, it is apparent that this is no ordinary hotel. The reception and lounge area is vast, but inviting, thanks to the comfortable-looking arm chairs and sofas.

The hotel has been delivering exceptional hospitality since 1933, so it’s no surprise they’re experts at making sure guests feel extra special. Whether you’re simply looking for a place to rest your head in between jam-packed days of being a tourist, or simply want to spend your time in the hotel’s spa and restaurants, your stay at Tivoli Avenida Liberdade will be equally as enjoyable.

Room

The presidential suite bedroom at the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade

We’re not exaggerating when we say you won’t want to leave your room at Tivoli Avenida Liberdade. Whether you’re staying in a deluxe room with an avenue view or a junior suite, the decor is simple yet elegant and all rooms come complete with LCD television, a Nespresso machine, and luxury toiletries. And if you opt for a family deluxe or a suite, you’ll have the choice of a walk-in shower and a huge bathtub.

So, if you’ve had a long day of sightseeing and have eaten a few too many tapas, chances are you’ll be changing into your complimentary white robe and slippers and will be set for the perfect night’s sleep in your room’s huge bed, which comes complete with the hotel’s signature bed linen.

Food

The impressive SKY BAR BY SEEN has amazing views across the city

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating and drinking at Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, and it really is worth checking out both of the hotel’s impressive restaurants.

Described as the new spot to ‘sin and be seen’, SEEN Lisboa is situated at the top of the hotel, and their sushi is a must try. The menu is extensive and has everything that a sushi lover would expect, and more. In particular I would recommend the lobster bun and the new style sashimi, but there are also fresh oysters, octopus carpaccio and a wagyu burger on the menu.

Everyone loves a cocktail with dinner, so either before or after your meal, you can take a seat outside and marvel at the amazing view provided at SKY BAR BY SEEN. Potentially the trendiest rooftop in Lisbon, the bar is open until 1am and you’re bound to stay warm thanks to the outdoor heaters and extensive cocktail menu.

As well as an impressive wine and champagne collection, SKY BAR BY SEEN also has an array of gin and tonic infusions available plus some pretty unique concoctions such as the mezcal fizz forever and the greenish cooler cocktail.

Cervejaria Liberdade serves the best fish and seafood sourced from the 800kms of Portuguese coastline

Breakfast is served at the hotel’s ground floor restaurant, Cervejaria Liberdade, which is also another great option for lunch and dinner too as it serves the best fish and seafood sourced from the 800kms of Portuguese coastline.

The setting is definitely more formal than SEEN and the food was absolutely delicious with a lot of dishes that are perfect for sharing, making it a great spot for a romantic meal for two. One starter that has to be tasted is the crab in its shell, as well as the Arraiolos buttery sheep’s milk cheese, which is served with a homemade pumpkin jam.

It’s recommended that meat is a must after any seafood entrée, and Cervejaria Liberdade is famous for its steak tartar which is made to suit your taste in front of you at your table. Other meat dishes on offer include grilled pork steaks and delicious lamb chops.

It is worth noting that the hotel also offers in-room dining as well as drinks and snacks at the lobby bar until 1am.

Spa

The Anantara Spa has a wide range of treatments from calming foot rituals to Thai massages

When you’ve done all of the sightseeing that your feet can manage, the Anantara Spa is on hand to ensure maximum relaxation. There’s an array of treatments on the menu, from calming foot rituals and body scrubs to traditional Thai massages and heavenly facials.

There is also an outdoor swimming pool that can be used in warmer months. Anantara Spa is open daily from 10am until 9pm, but the hotel recommends booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

To do

There’s plenty to do in Lisbon, from shopping and sightseeing, to eating, drinking and hanging by the ocean, and Tivoli Avenida Liberdade is in the perfect location for all of it.

The hotel is situated on an upmarket shopping street, which means you’re surrounded by designer stores, but just a short walk away you will find more affordable brands and high street shops, as well as the iconic Tram 28 and trendy districts Bairro Alto and Principe Real. There is also the Metro station, Avenida, a few steps away for those who want to explore a bit further.

Factbox

Getting there: The hotel is 7km from Lisbon Airport. There is also a railway station 800 metres away, the Metro is 150 metres, and buses and taxis can be caught right outside the hotel.

Nightly rates at Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa start from €180.
