Plymouth gets its first five-star hotel

Plymouth’s luxurious Boringdon Hall, a 16th Century country manor hotel, has become the city’s first five-star hotel – and only the second in Devon.

The privately-owned hotel, in Plympton, has been awarded the top-rung status by motoring organisation the AA.

The only other five-star hotel in Devon is currently Bovey Castle, in Moretonhampstead.

Boringdon Hall
The name ‘Boringdon’ comes from the Saxon ‘Burth-Y-Don’ meaning ‘enchanted place on the hill.’

Boringdon Hall staff said the status has been achieved because it offers the highest levels of service, and makes guest experience paramount.

Laura Cameron, operations director at Boringdon Hall, said: “I am thrilled for all of our team who have worked so hard towards this fantastic accolade. Many people have spoken of the need for a five star hotel in Plymouth and Boringdon Hall is now here for those people to enjoy true luxury.

“I would like to thank everyone involved at Boringdon for their professionalism and commitment. We are fortunate to have some very passionate hospitality enthusiasts on our team and it has been a pleasure to work with them towards this goal. Boringdon is over 400 years old with a fascinating and rich history, but we are most excited about being part of the future in Britain’s Ocean City.”

The hotel, which saw the launch of the new Gaia Spa in September, has also introduced concierge and valet services to further extend the guest experience.

Krzysztof Prokop, the hotel’s general manager, added: “Boringdon hall translates as ‘the enchanted place on the hill’ and it truly does enchant our guests. It has been a big challenge and a huge investment and we are delighted that all the hard work has been recognised with five stars.

“We were also listed by The Sunday Times as the Best Spa Hotel in the UK, I would like to thank all of our team, everyone has played their part and can be proud that they made history at Boringdon Hall.”

Recently Boringdon Hall has undergone complete refurbishment within all 40 bedrooms and suites. The Great Hall and The Gallery Restaurant have also been refurbished, bringing sumptuous luxury to the historic surroundings.

With the hotel’s appointment of head chef Scott Paton earlier this year, Boringdon Hall also offers the highest standards of fine dining.

Scott said: “It’s been an honour to be involved and part of this journey. Myself and my team are hugely proud of the achievement and for helping to contribute to this success.”
