If you’re considering a lavish sunshine holiday in Europe in 2023, then the idea of Italy has likely crossed your mind – and with its rich history, show-stopping architecture and mouth-watering cuisine, it’s easy to understand why it’s one of the top choices amongst affluent Brits looking for a culture-packed break abroad.

But Sicily is a region that is often overlooked, despite being the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the most densely populated, too. Together with Lipari, Pelagie, Egadi and Panteleria, Sicily forms an autonomous region of Italy and just like the mainland, is steeped in dramatic history and awash with spectacular scenery.

Enjoying a warm, sunny climate for much of the year, it attracts an affluent and sophisticated stream of holiday makers each year who come in search of its beautiful beaches and quaint towns – and whilst there are some stylish high-end hotels on offer that would make an excellent base during your stay, the array of luxury villas in Sicily that are available to rent offer a more private and exclusive experience.

We asked the experts at luxury villa rental company Scent of Sicily Villas to share the best destinations for an idyllic luxury getaway in summer this year – and these were their top picks.

Palermo

The Sicilian capital of Palermo is an obvious place to start if you’re a first-timer, and is steeped in intriguing ancient history. In fact, it’s recognised as the most conquered city in history, having been the capital of numerous kingdoms since it was first established during the Phoenician dominion – so if you’re looking for somewhere with a story to tell, then look no further.

Although Palermo has no beaches of its own, it’s just 10 km from the breath-taking Mondello beach, with its soft, golden sand and crystalline waters that are perfect for bathing. You’ll also find some of the best luxury villas in Sicily located in and around Palermo, making it a place that really does have it all.

Taormina

Taormina is a Sicilian treasure that can’t help but take your breath away, and is punctuated by fragrant bougainvillea and citrus trees, quaint cobbled streets and spectacular viewpoints. It’s also home to a vast array of sophisticated restaurants and boutiques and exudes class and elegance at every turn – so if you’re seeking a destination that feels exclusive, then look no further.

As you can imagine, in Taormina you’ll find some of the most opulent villas in Sicily, some of which offer impressive vistas of the surrounding countryside and coastline and others boasting sprawling swimming pools and spacious terraces, so you’ll have little problem finding the perfect hideaway for the duration of your stay.

Syracuse

Syracuse is easily one of the most enchanting destinations in all of Sicily – which is no small feat when you look at the competition. A heady mix of ancient traditions, mythology and legends of times gone by give it a charm like no other, and wandering through its ancient streets truly feels like a step back in time. Its historical centre is a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a must-see.

Syracuse is also just 15 km from the magnificent beach of Fontane Bianche, which gets its name from the many freshwater springs that flow to it. Think sugary white sand and clear blue sea, and you’ll be on the right track. If you’re thinking of renting a villa in Syracuse then you won’t regret it, because there’s plenty to keep you captivated here, no matter how long your stay.

Cefalù

Cefalù
Another of our favourite places to find high-end villas in Sicily is Cefalù, which can be found on the island’s northern coast and is reachable in around an hour from Palermo

Another of our favourite places to find high-end villas in Sicily is Cefalù, which can be found on the island’s northern coast and is reachable in around an hour from Palermo. Set along a 50 km stretch of breath-taking coastline which begins in Capo Zafferano and extends all the way to Cefalù, if you’re looking for a beach-centred getaway then it’s the perfect choice during the summer season.

Thanks to its proximity to Palermo, you won’t have to compromise on seeing historic sites and immersing yourself in the rich Sicilian culture, either – in fact, here, you can enjoy the best of both worlds. The best way to explore the city and its surroundings is by renting a car, as this will give you access to the numerous beaches along the coast and allow you to visit charming hamlets like pretty Santa Flavia, where tiny houses cling to the sides of a hill overlooking the ocean.
