Five travel apps you need in your life

By Naomi Webb   |

You probably have a phone full of apps, but how many of them do you actually use? There will be ones you wouldn’t dream of deleting, those apps that the majority of us go on everyday, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp and so on. But how many just sit there simply taking up your limited storage space?

We all travel, whether it is across the country to visit family, into the city for work or across the globe for a holiday. The process can at times be extremely stressful – so why not make it a little bit easier by deleting a few of those novelty apps and, in their place, downloading some travel apps.

Before you start, here are 5 travel apps that you NEED in your life:

1.) Citymapper
Citymapper is available in around 30 cities worldwide including – London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manchester and Birmingham. It offers detailed journey planner information, including real-time departures and disruption alerts, as well as Uber integration and cycle routes.

You can navigate your way around unknown and complex cities by foot, tube, bus, bike, train, ferry or tram. It also includes fairly pointless information, such as how long your journey would take by jetpack – but it might just bring a smile to your face when the public transport is delayed yet again.

2.) Tripit
Tripit is the perfect app for keeping all your travel information organised and together in one place. Everything from confirmation emails for flights, hotels, rental cars to events bookings will be converted into a single itinerary.

All you need to do is forward your emails to the app and the rest will be done for you. It is then also very easy to share your plans with others if you are travelling as a group.

3.) Google Translate
Have you ever found yourself in another country and wished there was a simple way to understand a street sign or menu, or that you could ask the basic questions such as: where is…? How much is? What is…? Then this is the app for you!

Simply hold your camera up to the text that you want to translate – whether that is a sign or a menu, and Google will translate it for you instantly. Perfect to help you pick up a new language as well as taking away that lost feeling that you can get in a foreign country.

4.) Time Out
Time Out is the perfect app to help you decide what to do in a new city – so you don’t miss out on any exciting one off events or spend half your time trying to research things to do. Whether you are in Amsterdam or Singapore you can find out about bars, restaurants, attractions, and events. You can also book tickets through the app and create a customised travel guide.

5.) Airbnb
Whether you are spending a weekend in the capital, or travelling abroad for your summer holiday, Airbnb (image above) is the perfect place to find you accommodation. It has over 1,500,000 listings in 34,000 cities and 190 countries – so you are sure to find the perfect place for you.

If you would love to download these apps, but can’t due to a cracked screen, get in touch with Lovefone – they can have it fixed while you wait, so you can start downloading and using these apps before you know it. You will, however, have to make the journey to the store without the assistance of citymapper!
