Test drive: Toyota C-HR, a versatile, high-tech and distinctively different SUV

LLM motoring editor Lisa Curtiss reviews the Toyota C-HR, a cracking car that offers the compelling combination of striking good looks, performance, quality, advanced tech, and practicality.

Hailed as the urban SUV that leaves ordinary behind, Toyota’s super-stylish C-HR is a mid-size eye-catching model that’s a delight to drive.

Practical too it offers the versatility to use either electric energy or a combination of petrol and electric power to fully optimise performance, meaning you can drive the way you always have.

Refreshingly stylistically different, the Toyota C-HR’s striking angular looks set it apart from the crowd and hint at its ample performance and driver engagement. It looks like it will be fun and indeed is! But it’s also super-easy to live with, economical, eco-conscious and incredibly well built, and has the reassurance of Toyota’s 10-year guarantee.

Stylish and tech rich

Slip inside and you’ll find a cabin that’s as artfully designed as the exterior, with high quality, durable materials and ergonomically placed, intuitive controls. The seats are supportive and feature diamond patterns that lend a little prestige. Lining the interior, soft-touch surfaces are paired with contrasting gloss black inserts to create a contemporary feel. Then as day fades, the mood changes, and you are bathed in the soft blue glow of ambient lighting.

Being a Toyota, of course the C-HR is as tech rich as cars come. Owners will appreciate MyT Connected Services which include MyT Multimedia and MyT App. Each suite is host to its own set of features, designed to make driving safer and more fun, whether you are inside or outside your vehicle. Through MyT Connected Services, you’ll have access to real-time updates such as speed camera warnings and online service booking. In addition, you’ll have the ability to connect your phone to your car to enjoy your favourite apps directly through the infotainment screen. Clever stuff indeed.

Safety first

The Toyota C-HR also has some of the most sophisticated safety technologies in the world. Highlights include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA-B) – when you back out of a parking space, rear-mounted sensors identify vehicles approaching from the left or right, warning you and then applying the brakes to avoid a collision.

Also, there’s Simple Intelligent Parking Assist (S-IPA) which helps you to steer your Toyota smoothly into a parking space or garage. All you do is provide the necessary acceleration and braking while the car parks itself. And, Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Automatic Braking which by using an array of sensors to create a 360° picture, detects objects around the vehicle, and provides an audible warning before applying the brakes to avoid a collision.

Comprehensive trims

There are several trim grades, all of which are comprehensive even as standard. Even entry level models feature 17″ Silver alloy wheels (5-double-spoke), Toyota Safety Sense 2 incl Pre-Collision System with Cyclist Detection, Day and Night-time Pedestrian Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Trace Assist (LTA), Automatic High beam (AHB) and Road Sign Assist (RSA), 8″ touchscreen with Toyota Touch 2 media system with Smartphone Integration, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 6 speakers, DAB and Bluetooth connectivity, wi-fi and voice recognition, a reversing camera, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and much more.

The top GR Sport grade features 19″ Black machined-face alloy wheels, bi-tone paint, GR SPORT Badges and scuff plates, GR SPORT Stabilisers, 3-spoke perforated leather steering wheel with red stitching, tinted LED adaptive headlights and more.

Out on the road

Performance wise, this is a super car to drive, highly responsive, with ample power, instant acceleration, and precise steering. The recently introduced 2.0 litre Hybrid powertrain is equally at home on the motorway, or local B-roads. It’s one of our favourite SUVs to have on test as is such a capable and versatile car to drive and live with.

The Toyota C-HR is a cracking car that offers the compelling combination of striking good looks, performance, quality, advanced tech, and practicality. Not forgetting respectable eco-creds too.
