Women spend over fortnight a year getting ready

British women spend up to two weeks a year just on doing their hair and make up. Well that’s according to a new study by online hair and beauty retailer Hairtrade.com, who looked into how much time the average woman spends doing her make up and styling her hair.

The data revealed that over a year, a woman will spend a week and ten days on her hair and make up, which equates to two and half years in a lifetime.

The startling statistics from their focus group found that the average woman spends 15 minutes on weekdays doing her make up and 30 minutes on weekend days.

On a girly night out, ladies can spend up to an hour just applying the slap. This comes to a whooping total of a week spent putting on make up every year.

As for hairstyling, 35 minutes is devoted each day to taming tresses, including washing, blow drying and styling. According to those questioned, ten minutes a day is spent shampooing and conditioning hair. A further 15 minutes is devoted to blow-drying and then the same again styling into a do. Again, an hour spent on party hair once a week was included, racking up to a total of four and a half hours every week spent on hair. This tots up to ten days every year just spent on washing, blow drying and styling.

Over the course of a lifetime, getting ready takes a huge chunk of two and half years.

Joanne Dodds, from Hairtrade.com, said: “Every woman who takes time on their appearance has uttered the little white lie ‘I’ll be down in a minute’ but this data shows that this is more than justified. For special occasions, spending more time on your hair and make up feels noticeable but we were surprised to see how much time is spent just getting ready for work everyday.

“There’s no shame in spending a lot of time getting ready, for many women it is all part of building their confidence and something they do for themselves to make them feel special everyday. If you are looking to shave off a bit of time spent on your beauty regime there are a few simple things you can do.

“Having your hair cut on a regular basis will help keep it in top condition so there will be less need to style is so often. Washing your hair every day also isn’t necessary and can in fact do more harm than good. Try and wash it every other day to avoid stripping your hair of its natural oils.”
