Both tradition and luxury are steeped into many experiences across the world. Here, we take a closer look at some of the very best examples of where both come together to create something truly special in their respective region of the world.

The Grand National at Aintree

Horse racing is a sport that has deep historical roots in the UK. The sport dates back to the Middle Ages, and today is the second largest spectator sport in the country.

One of the most famous events in the sport is the Grand National. The annual event at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool is watched by millions each year and it is known as the most famous steeplechase in the world. It was won in 2023 by Corach Rambler, and the defending champion is set to return to the race again in 2024 where he is the 20/1 favourite in the current horse betting online to prevail for a second time.

Those who attend the Grand National can do so in luxury by purchasing a hospitality package at the racecourse. These include a private box in the main grandstand that is positioned right in front of the winning line. Hospitality guests can also book themselves into one of the racecourse’s many fine dining restaurants where they can wine and dine on exceptional food and drink while enjoying all the action.

One of the many traditions that Grand National attendees like to do is dress up to the nines for the event. Prizes are awarded for the best dressed on the day, with various categories such as ‘Best Hat’ and ‘Best Dress’. Racegoers bring out their most elegant attire for the prestigious annual race.

For a regal experience, you could also attend the week of Royal Ascot at Berkshire’s iconic Ascot Racecourse, known as such due to it’s strong ties to the British royal family. Today, the royal family are still regular attendees, with the coveted event taking place every year in June. Royal Ascot welcomes around 300,000 visitors over five incredible days of racing.

Tea ceremonies in Kyoto

If you’re looking for something a little more private and exclusive, tea ceremonies in Japan have long been used as a soothing and elegant escape

If you’re looking for something a little more private and exclusive, tea ceremonies in Japan have long been used as a soothing and elegant escape. Known as ‘chanoyu’, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony features the preparation of matcha, a strong green tea. The tea is prepared according to ancient Japanese ritual, in a beautiful zen environment. It is commonly then shared around a circle of friends or family.

Traditional tea ceremonies are very popular in Kyoto, one of Japan’s oldest cities. They can be experienced in a private session in a luxurious ryokan (Japanese style inn) or in hotels throughout the city. To make the experience even more luxurious, some come complete with gourmet wagashi, a traditional Japanese confection.

The best ryokans in the area will feature serene gardens, and perhaps even a mountain view, allowing you to relax in a tranquil and calming environment. These are popular throughout the year, and they are also enjoyed by many tourists who visit Kyoto, either on their own or with a group of friends.

Traditional hammams in Morocco

For an understated spa-like experience, why not try a traditional Morrocan hammam

For an understated spa-like experience, why not try a traditional Moroccan hammam, or public steam bath. But don’t worry. Moroccan hammams can now be enjoyed in private settings alongside spa treatments, aromatherapy, and relaxation lounges. Many leading hotels in the country now offer this service, while there are also specialist spas where you can spend a day to relax and switch off from the outside world.

Whilst you could get a similar experience at your favourite spa, we recommend visiting a traditional or private hammam. Here you will begin in a sauna to open your pores before you enter the steam room. The traditional method of deep cleansing here is ‘savon beldi‘, or black-olive oil soap. This is used as a body scrub with a ‘kessa’ loofah before rinsing, scrubbing and relaxing. After your hammam visit, you’ll be left feeling energised, exfoliated and enlightened.

If you’re on the look out for a fresh but ancient experience with an edge of luxury, these are some wonderful options. They also would all make a lovely birthday or anniversary gift to a loved one.
