Here are six reasons to add Barcelona to your travel list before the year is out.

Thought Barcelona was only a summer destination? Then it’s time to think again, because this culturally rich and architecturally diverse city has plenty to offer travellers throughout the winter months, too. The largest city of the autonomous community of Catalonia on the north-eastern coast of Spain, it might be best known for its balmy temperatures and proximity to some great beaches, but it’s also home to some excellent luxury hotels and high-end eateries.

Add to that the epic list of sights to see and events to attend, and there’s something for everyone – so here are six reasons to add Barcelona to your travel list before the year is out.

The incredible architecture

The most famous landmark not just in Barcelona, but all of Spain, Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Família, is still under construction over 100 years on from when the project began. Seeing it is a bucket list must that every traveller should tick off at least once, and it’s as impressive in real life as looks in pictures – if not more so.

Gaudi has left his mark throughout the city, and there are numerous other architectural sites you’ll want to take in during your exploration of the city. The art-nouveau Casa Batllo, on Passeig de Gracia, and the nearby La Pedrera, designed and built between 1905 and 1910, should all feature in your itinerary.

The sunny weather

You might be visiting out of season, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that Barcelona enjoys plenty of bright, sunny days, year-round. From November to February, temperatures sit at around 12°C on average, but although you’ll need to wrap up warm, the golden light that bathes the city’s most iconic sights will keep your energy levels high and ensure you can still make the most out of a short city break.

So, if you’re eager to escape the dark and dreary British wintertime, then all it takes is a short hop to Spain.

Free run of the Boqueria

Barcelona’s famous Boqueria market, which can be found just off Las Ramblas, is a haven for foodies, and filled to the brim with stalls bearing fresh fruits and juices, freshly baked cakes and biscuits and local meats and cheeses – but in the summer months, amidst all the crowds, it can be difficult to get a look-in. Visit in the winter, and you can enjoy a relaxed shopping experience and take the time to browse, peruse and chat with the locals for an authentic experience you just wouldn’t get in peak season.

The Christmas cheer

Barcelona is a sight to behold in the lead-up to Christmas, and exhibits some uniquely Catalan traditions you won’t want to miss – so book yourself a cosy weekend at one of the city’s finest five-star hotels in December and take your time soaking it all in.

Markets spring up all over the city from the end of November, but the biggest and best is Fira de Santa Llúia, which has been happening annually in the city since 1786. Located just in front of the Gothic Cathedral – another must see at this time of year – it’s the perfect place to while away an afternoon and sample some seasonal fare like the ‘sopa de nadal’ – a Christmas soup made from meat, vegetables and pasta.

The Michelin-starred restaurants

On the topic of food, Barcelona is home to an impressive array of Michelin-starred restaurants; 19, to be precise. Stay at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental hotel and you’ll have direct access to Moments, which is one of the best, and is the brainchild of talented chef Raul Balam – son of Carme Ruscalleda.

Meanwhile, at Lasarte, Martin Berasategui’s fine dining masterpieces can be enjoyed as part of a decadent tasting menu that makes for an annual treat you’ll want to come back for every year. Currently boasting three Michelin stars, it’s the perfect place to truly indulge in some of the finest cuisine the region has to offer, and in the winter months, you’ll have an easier time getting a table.

IBTM World

If you’re travelling for business, then consider factoring in some time to attend this year’s IBTM World. Happening from 29th November to the 1st December, this leading global event for the meetings, incentives, conferences and events industry is one that every professional in the field can learn something from. Aiming to inspire the events world to deliver exceptional experiences for customers, if it’s a topic that applies to you then be sure to book your tickets, as they’re expected to sell out fast.
