Top 3 places to stay in Newmarket, the home of British horse racing

Whether you’re a devoted horse racing fan or just a lover of beautiful English towns, Newmarket is sure to appeal.

By Rachel Ducker   |

Now home to over 3,000 horses along with two racecourses, the historic Suffolk town of Newmarket hosts five British Classic Races plus countless race days at the prestigious July festival. This includes three days of world class racing and, of course, the fabulous fashion that goes with it.

Newmarket’s beautiful countryside has attracted visitors for centuries and is the perfect place to explore the country paths, discover the historic rural pubs, and enjoy the peace and quiet of country life.

LLM contributor Rachel Ducker seeks out three of the finest luxury accommodation options to book in the town in 2023.

Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa

Bedford Lodge hotel

Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa is set in three acres of secluded rose gardens, retaining the charm and character of a country house yet offering the very best in modern comfort and luxury, providing a perfect blend of old and new.

There are 80 luxury bedrooms including 23 super king-sized rooms, benefitting from the added luxury of a separate bath and shower. Rooms are modern with a classic feel and well equipped with everything you would expect from a four star hotel: gowns, a comfy bed, sky TV, mini-bar and, much to my delight, Molton Brown toiletries.

The spa is separate to the hotel, housed in a former hunting lodge on Bury Road, near the famous Gallops and the smart Godolphin Stud. The main hydrotherapy area is a modern extension made up almost entirely of glass which overlooks a perfectly manicured garden – glorious on a sunny day.

Recognised by the Good Spa Guide with their highest ‘five Bubble’ rating, here you can take weekend breaks to calming spa days and then retreat back to their four Red Star hotel and award winning restaurant.

The Packhorse Inn

The Packhorse Inn

Nestled in the folds of the West Suffolk hills, the Packhorse Inn sits at the heart of its community.

Just outside of Newmarket, this pretty village pub overlooks the village green and is perfectly placed for those who want to be near the action but not necessarily in the thick of it.

As part of The Chestnut Group, the first and founding inspiration for the Chestnut Collection, The Packhorse Inn remains the patriarch of the family – after all it’s where it all began.

Rooms are generously proportioned within the pub and a converted coach house, all have individual character – inspired by French country, Scandi cool and grand Parisian style.

Some are light and airy, others dramatic and opulent with views of the village green or garden terrace. Crisp Egyptian cotton bed linen, indulgent king and super king beds, thoughtfully selected antique pieces and free standing baths – there’s a lot to stay in bed for!

Wagging tails are always welcome, so much so, they have created an overnight stay package and a special dog menu, with your four-legged companion in mind.

The Jockey Rooms

The Jockey Rooms

Situated on Newmarket’s busy high street just a ten-minute walk from the gallops is The Jockey Rooms.

This iron gated Georgian house will give you a unique insight into the heart of British horseracing, whilst providing luxury accommodation in one of its eighteen generously sized rooms.

For over 250 years this grand house has provided a home-from-home experience. Previously a member’s club, but now open for all, this country house retains its character and charm.

There is no getting away from the equine theme, with horse racing paintings and memorabilia throughout, but it’s great to explore this historically fascinating institution.
