A review of Coldwell Cottage in the Lake District, an Original Cottages property

The British ‘staycation’ will inspire you to discover a new corner of the quintessential English countryside.

With local expertise across a national reach of over 5,800 properties is private rental company Original Cottages: the go-to destination for your next sublime staycation in one of their charming cottages across England and Wales.

Original Cottages led us to Coldwell Cottage in the Lake District, a stone-built property, catering up to six people. A beautiful farmhouse tucked quietly among 35 acres of fields, woodland, limestone pavements, stream and ponds; here you’ll find a staycation sanctuary, lovingly renovated by its friendly owners who have owned the property for decades.

With a choice of beautiful spaces inside and out, Coldwell Cottage is a cosy yet contemporary property that adapts throughout the seasons. We visited in late September, a time when the leaves began to crisp with a hint of the first frost: not quite summer, not yet autumn. With a chill in the air, we were presented with the perfect spot to curl up by the wood-burning stove with views of the garden pond through the charming sash windows.

The living room is the heart of the cottage and gracefully leads onto the open-plan kitchen and dining area which can seat up to ten. This is where we enjoyed relaxed mid-morning brunches and wholesome home-cooked dinners. With French doors that open onto a patio for al fresco style dining to the sound of the waterfall and wildfowl, this bright, naturally lit kitchen has everything and more – for even the most ambitious chef. This includes an adjoining pantry and utility room that leads into the huge barn where bikes and equipment can be stored.

Outside, one of the unique features Coldwell Cottage offers is its covered outdoor kitchen or ‘summer kitchen’ which is ideal for the summer months. A particularly great asset for anyone who’s keen to give pizza making a go, here you can warm up against the French open fire and the original Italian woodfired pizza oven with its rustic food preparation area for the ultimate al fresco dining experience that brings a taste of Italy to the Lakes.

Coldwell Cottage sleeps up to six people across three beautifully finished bedrooms, with each offering its own views out over the garden or pond – the first includes a king-sized bed, the second a standard double and the third with twin beds. These go alongside the family bathroom with a spacious bath and a separate walk-in shower. Whilst downstairs and beyond the wooden front door, pull your wellies on to explore the cottage’s 35 acres of private grasslands. This is abundant with local wildlife among the ponds, streams and resident donkeys who are always on hand to welcome you on arrival.

Surrounding area

Situated in the lush woodland and surrounding fields, it’s hard to believe that Coldwell Cottage is located less than a mile from the gorgeous Kent Estuary with its famous bore (tidal movement), which is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. Conveniently situated between Silverdale, Yealand and Arnside villages on the beautiful South Cumbria peninsula, the areas offer endless walking and cycling routes, making it the perfect spot for easily discovering all The Lake District has to offer.

Just a four-minute drive away, the quaint coastal village of Arnside offers long coastal walks. Climb Arnside Knott for its views over the Kent Estuary and Morecambe Bay, across the Cumbrian peninsula and the region’s mountains. You can also walk to Warton Crag or through Leighton Hall grounds to Leighton Moss Bird Reserve. Alternatively, hop on the train at Arnside across the estuary to the pretty Edwardian town of Grange Over Sands with its shops and tea rooms.
