Whether you are looking for winter sun or summer fun, Tenerife is a top destination, no matter the season, and if you want to escape the crowded resorts of Playa de las Américas, you should consider Playa la Arena. A charming, quaint resort town to the east of the island, it attracts a more sophisticated, well-heeled audience, and that is very much in evidence when you stroll around the palatial surroundings of Hotel Playa La Arena.

Hotel

The stylish and spacious lobby makes excellent use of natural sunlight

With two hotels occupying over 80,000 square metres, Hotel Playa La Arena and Hotel Costa Los Gigantes are undoubtedly the major hotel players in this area. Whilst the latter caters mainly for families, the former is for those who want convenient access to the beachfront. With 432 rooms and eight floors, you might be expecting a concrete behemoth, but the strategic greenery covering all levels of the resort offers a serene and peaceful environment. They make healthy use of natural sunlight as well as an overall pristine, marbled white atmosphere, so you are eased into holiday mode as soon as you step through to reception.

You might need some assistance with orientation initially with four pools, numerous dining and wining venues, fitness, and even a performance space. The striking, black volcanic sandy beach is mere metres away from the hotel. Local shops and restaurants are also near for those looking for a break from the hotel offerings, even though it is all-inclusive. The hotel might be four stars, but you will get a regal five-star experience if you upgrade to their Platinum Club package. It is much more of a personalised service including exclusive check-in, exclusive dining areas and exclusive infinity pool area.

The neutral, colour scheme of the lobby extends to the rooms with cooling shades of white that offer a soothing environment.

The hotel has five categories ranging from a standard room to a platinum suite ranging from 30m² to 55m². The platinum categories are the most desirable with stupendous views of the Atlantic Ocean along with relaxing balcony space. You have a complimentary minibar, docking station with alarm clock, pillow menu and plush bathrobe and slippers which will be the envy of the pool area. Although it is for adults only who are 16 and above.

The neutral, colour scheme of the lobby extends to the rooms with cooling shades of white that offer a soothing environment. Satellite TV and air-conditioning come as standard, but the Wi-Fi is particularly steady whether you are in the room or strolling around the vast landscape of the hotel.

Food and drink

The hotel offers a range of dining outlets serving local fresh dishes

The gastronomic offering is based around the buffet stations at Lava Restaurante. They have an extensive selection that caters for all kinds of dietary requirements and is particularly strong on the vegetarian front with a salad station that is abundant in local produce. The live cooking station is catered towards heartier fare from grilled meats to comforting bowls of pasta.

If you want to try local specialities in a more structured setting, they do have an à la carte restaurant, Arena. You can also use the restaurants at Landmar Costa Los Gigantes if you fancy a change of scenery and admire the locality from a higher vantage point.

If you are looking for refinement, that comes in the form of The View Platinum Club and the Platinum Club Lounge. It might be offering delectable ‘snacks’ but that comes in the form of tiger prawns and caviar, available exclusively to platinum club members. You also get premium spirits like Bombay Sapphire gin and unlimited bubbles in the form of Freixenet Cava.

Spa

Spa facilities include a stunning indoor pool

The spa facilities are based at MindUP Spa, Landmar Costa Los Gigantes. There is a shortcut between the hotels, so do check with the staff before trekking out. Their state-of-the-art water circuit will help to ease any residual tension you might have before the start of your holidays. They also offer various detox treatments from seaweed wrap to salt peeling treatment. They are generally at a reasonable cost compared to London prices.

To do

The Olé Flamenco Show takes you on a mesmerising journey through Spanish dance

The experiences the hotel can arrange for guests are endless, from star-gazing in the Teide (the summit of Mount Teide is the highest point in Spain) to dolphin-watching to a general tour of the south of the island.

If you want a slice of culture along with your beach days, then I would highly recommend asking the hotel to book a ticket to see Olé Flamenco Show. The hugely talented Fran Chafino, along with his cast, takes you on a mesmerising journey through Spanish dance. The modern choreography, musical arrangements and lighting will undoubtedly surprise countless tourists.
