Away from the resort-laden area of Maspalomas, Salobre Hotel Resort and Serenity is a wellness retreat that delivers tranquillity in abundance. It is situated on an arid hillside with a haunting landscape that wouldn’t look out of place in films like The Martian, and any greenery you might spot is likely to be one of the two golf courses linked with the property.

The subtropical climate gives rise to a plethora of unique fauna and flora

The hotel provides a free shuttle for those who want to head beach-side or into town, however, for those seeking to recharge their batteries and disconnect from the grind of daily life, this is just the place for you. A countryside escape that has plenty to offer from golf to wellness to culinary adventures, the hotel uses the natural landscape to its advantage.

The subtropical climate in the south of Gran Canaria, where the hotel is based, gives rise to a plethora of unique fauna and flora boasting some species have not been seen anywhere else in the world. In the Aloedarium, you’ll find over 500 aloe species from all across the globe and so it’ll come as no surprise to discover their wellness centre is called Be Aloe.

The advantage of being away from Maspalomas also means guests can enjoy a clear night-time sky with minimal light pollution. The hotel runs stargazing workshops for those curious about astronomy and they also often have temporary art exhibitions from local artists displayed in their spacious event spaces.

Room

Spacious rooms and suites overlook the arid landscape

There are 313 rooms in total but you never feel overcrowded as there are 11 floors in total spread out across a vast landscape. Entry-level double deluxe rooms start at 42 m². At the other end of the spectrum, their equivalent of the presidential suite, you get an expansive living room with a separate bedroom and an oval bath, all with stupendous views of the mesmerising countryside. Just the rooftop solarium is 60 m² with a relaxing jacuzzi and hammock.

They offer a spacious rainfall shower along with amenities that are plant-based and only use extracts from controlled organic cultivation. 100% cotton bathrobes and towels are supplied along with velour slippers, and it is helpful that mineral water is replenished daily free of charge as there are not too many shops in the vicinity.

Dining options include Sidecar that serves an a la carte menu

Salobre Hotel excels with their culinary offerings at SENS Kitchen Patio Garden. It might be an all-inclusive buffet resort but they ensure there are plenty of live cooking stations available so dishes are prepared in front of your eyes. It is arranged food-stall style, so you have a barbecue station for the carnivorous diners, a seafood station offering the catch-of-the-day selection, and there is a world-cuisine section where you can assemble your pad Thai, for example, and then it will be prepared by the chef.

There are also a la carte options available at S-Club and Sidecar restaurants, and if you book for a full-board experience, you can also enjoy lunch at the S-Club with healthy options like salmon poke and grilled Canarian vegetables.

Spa and wellness

The Be Aloe wellness facility is one of the best on Gran Canaria

Be Aloe wellness facility is one of the best you’ll find in Gran Canaria – they have everything from an 80ºC Finnish sauna to the more exotic oxygen therapy cabin with 99.998% pure air. They’ve recently installed andullation therapy massage beds and their aloe ritual is a must for all those visiting the facilities. You’ll receive a full body massage that utilises the nourishing properties of aloe vera to hydrate and repair your body and you’ll finish off the experience with a glass of aloe that is packed with vital antioxidants.

The outdoor areas are even more popular – apart from their two meticulously designed golf courses, the hotel boasts a gym, basketball court, cycling, eco-fitness area, football pitch, yoga class and running track. That is on top of the soothing vitality pool that includes bubble beds and therapeutic jets.

Perchel Beach Club has a stunning beachfront location

If you are looking for a relaxing half-day trip away from the resort, I would recommend taking a visit to the family friendly Perchel Beach Club. It is approximately a 20-minute drive from the hotel and has one of the most captivating infinity pools on the island. The environment is far more inclusive than some other venues which focus more on a party experience. Here, you’ll find La Arrocería, which focuses on Mediterranean cuisine and also a sushi bar, which serves an eclectic mixture of sushi offerings.

In a nutshell

If you are looking for a wellness escape that is an oasis of tranquillity, make sure you pay a visit to Salobre Hotel Resort and Serenity.
