Thinking of exploring the sights and sounds of Europe this summer? Whilst it certainly couldn’t be easier to do so by plane or train in 2024, taking to the roads to explore by car or camper is still one of the best options for those eager to go at their own pace, enjoy a spot of privacy, and most importantly, travel in the utmost of style and luxury.

Travelling by road allows you to see scenic landscapes and breath-taking views you might otherwise have missed, and to watch as the colours and shapes of one country blend seamlessly into another. And of course, there’s nothing quite like the sense of freedom that comes with hitting the open road, or the sense of adventure afforded to you by having no fixed schedules or time constraints to adhere to. Instead, you can chart your own course and discover hidden gems off the beaten path. Whether you’re drawn to quaint countryside villages or bustling cities brimming with culture, the allure of the endless possibilities of a European road trip are difficult to ignore.

Here, we take a look at why road tripping through Europe is the ultimate travel experience, and offer you a sneak peak into some of the most scenic routes to inspire your next adventure.

Freedom, flexibility, spontaneity

As we’ve touched upon, freedom is far and away one of the biggest reasons to consider exploring Europe by road, and with that comes complete flexibility when it comes to your plans and the option to be as spontaneous as you like when changing them, even at no more than a moment’s notice. With no fixed itinerary, you can take a detour from your original planned route to explore the natural beauty of a hidden valley or a cliffside village, park up to hike to a viewpoint or simply pull over and enjoy the spectacular vistas from exactly where you are. Life is often all about rules and time constraints, but when you’re behind the wheel, you’re free to seize each moment in a way that feels good to you, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Spectacular scenic routes

Europe is home to some of the world’s most spectacular scenic drives, which is reason enough to scrap the idea of flying or interrailing and go by car instead. Offering jaw-dropping views and unforgettable experiences, there are several iconic routes you won’t want to miss.

Widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the world, the Amalfi Coast road winds its way along the jagged cliffs and rugged coastline of southern Italy, with more than a few hairpin bends along the way. Whilst driving this close to the edge off the cliffs is not for the faint hearted, it’s worth it if you can muster up the courage, and  offering sweeping views of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and charming cliffside villages, it’s a truly magical experience.  From the pastel-toned buildings of Positano to the historic town of Ravello, every twist and turn of this iconic route offers a new surprise and a new moment of awe.

Its dramatic coastal scenery makes Norway’s Atlantic Road an awe-inspiring drive, with this impressive feat of engineering traversing a series of bridges and causeways and connecting a number of picturesque islands along the way. Passing serene fjords and quaint fishing villages and passing pretty stretches of coastline where the waves crash against the shore, every inch of this stunning route offers the chance to marvel at Norway’s seemingly never-ending natural beauty.

The Romantic Road in Germany is also worth including in your plans. Steeped in history and folklore, its winding route takes you through the heart of Bavaria, where you’ll see fairytale castles, medieval towns, and verdant vineyards along the way.  From the pretty town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber to the majestic Neuschwanstein Castle, every stop along this iconic route promises to whisk you back in time.

Glamping in nature

While there’s no denying that there’s a lot to be said for five-star hotels, there’s nothing quite like spending time in nature. Image credit: denbelitsky/Bigstock.com

One of the best things about travelling Europe by road is that you can pause at beautiful wild locations along the way and spend the night in your luxurious camper van or under canvas if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous. While there’s no denying that there’s a lot to be said for five-star hotels, there’s nothing quite like spending time in nature, and it’s the perfect chance to enjoy an unrivalled sense of peace and tranquility.

There’s no need to pass on all the luxuries you’re accustomed to, either, as with a portable power station, you can power up all of the essentials wherever you are. Offering various capacities and outputs, you’ll be able to make use of your kitchen appliances and charge up your tech, even in the middle of nowhere.
